Age verification

Why PopIn checks your age, and what to do if you're asked again.

PopIn requires account holders to be 16 or older. This isn't a house rule, it's Australian law (the Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Act 2024). Here's how it works and why you might be asked to confirm your date of birth.

At sign-up

You enter your date of birth when you create your account. It's used to confirm you meet the minimum age and is kept private by default, see Privacy settings explained.

If you're asked again

The first time you do something social, post, comment, react, create an event, send a message, or add a story, PopIn may ask you to confirm your date of birth in a quick pop-up. Confirm it once and you won't be asked again.

Why the extra step?

The check gates the features that let you reach other people. Browsing and RSVPing don't trigger it, posting and messaging do, so the age requirement is enforced exactly where the law expects it.

Guests don't need to verify

If you're RSVPing to a friend's event without an account, none of this applies, no account, no age check. The requirement is only for people who hold a PopIn account and use its social features. See Inviting people without a PopIn account.
